Silver Haired Legislature slates town hall meeting in Bandera
Published May 8, 2008
Senior citizens and caregivers of Bandera County are invited to attend the first town hall meeting of the Texas Silver Haired Legislature (TSHL).
The meeting will be held from 9 am until 11 am, Wednesday, May 14, at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center, 803 Buck Creek Boulevard. It will be televised to multiple sites in the 13-county Alamo Area.
A panel of experts will discuss topics such as transportation, elder justice, affordable housing and community resources. Dr. Bob Fitzgerald, Bandera County TSHL representative, will host the program. He will relay information gleaned from discussions with local senior citizens to members of the next state legislative session.
“Let your voices be heard in the next session of our Texas State Legislature,” Fitzgerald said. “The input of area seniors is crucial.”
The TSHL Town Hall Meeting is sponsored by a a grant from AT&T.

“Volunteers are not paid – not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.” This anonymous quote says it all.
If it weren’t for our fantastic volunteers, Bandera’s Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center just wouldn’t be. Take a look at our monthly calendar of events – daily activities, classes, meals for seniors and the homebound and other events put on primarily by the efforts and talents of volunteers – and you’ll understand.
Along with other concerned groups in our county, Silver Sage is “manning” a computer “Web of Caring,” seeking volunteers with extra time, an area of specialized expertise and a willingness to help others. If a need arises, these volunteers would be called to help a senior in need. We recently had a senior who needed a few grocery items but couldn’t drive. A volunteer name “popped up” in our Web of Caring. That person was called and the senior was picked up and taken to the grocery store, assisted with shopping and driven home. Other volunteers transport seniors to doctor appointments, help out with paperwork or substitute as a driver for Meals on Wheels. To “make a difference,” call us and add your name to the Web of Caring.
Another tremendous way to volunteer is through monetary donations. Silver Sage is involved in a “March for Meals,” a national drive to raise funds for the Senior Meals and Meals on Wheels Programs. We serve about 1,800 meals monthly to our homebound and senior citizens – but more county residents need this service. We get some help from the federal government, but there’s a cap to their funding, so we rely on grants and donations to keep programs operational.
“March for Meals” is a grant program offered by the Alan Feinstein Foundation, which matches donations received during this campaign. Deadline for the grant application is April 30. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated!
On Saturday, April 5, our board members, along with various city officials, will take up collections for the “March for Meals” grant at the intersection of Highways 16 and 173 – the corner of Main and Cypress streets. Please be generous!
Don’t forget – tomorrow, April 4, is our First Friday Breakfast, prepared and served by Silver Sage Board of Directors and “friends.” Serving time is 7 am to 9 am. Get there early so you “don’t miss a thing”!
Our next Computer Class will be Tuesday, April 15. We have four available computers and need four students for the class. Call in advance to guarantee a computer!
On Saturday, April 19, at 7:30 pm, in cooperation of the Bandera Riverside Players and our Writing Group, a “Reading of Original Works” will be presented. If you’re interested in reading an original work, call our office at 830-796-4969 to schedule a try-out.
The Corral’s new pool table will be ready for use sometime next week, so start “chalking those cues!” Bruce Woodall donated the pool table and Barbara Bartkoviak offered funds for the refinishing. Thanks, Bruce and Barbara, for your generosity. We do appreciate you!
This whole column has been about volunteers. Bandera County residents are fortunate to have such talented, caring and hard-working citizens. The beauty of their efforts is that they don’t realize how hard they are working -- they enjoy “doing” for others so much. You are all truly “priceless!”

Hope you all had a wonderful Spring Break with family and grandkids, a good start to a beautiful spring, a Happy Easter, nice rains – and no “mud showers!”
We understand that quite a few folks have been calling about the AARP Tax Help service, but this is not available locally this year. If you need help, call the office at the Corral at 830-796-4969 for information on how to receive help in Kerrville, Boerne or Hondo.
It's already time for Silver Sage's Friday Nite Jam, at 6:30 pm, March 28. This has become a very well attended and much enjoyed event – in fact, last month's jam session drew in some 90 energetic, music loving and boot-scootin' guys and gals! There was even dancing in the halls! Join us in the fun this Friday!
Tuesday, April 1 – no foolin' – is the date of our next free Hand Clinic hosted by “Carmen's Crew” of Comprehensive Physical Therapy and Bandera Fitness. If you have never experienced this pampering, you must come in. The trained therapists begin with a heated paraffin hand bath and follow with a relaxing massage of fingers and hands, with particular attention being giving to arthritic-pained areas. Men and women alike enjoy the benefits of this monthly treat. Pampering begins at 10 am and continues until 11:30 am. Our next Foot Clinic will be held the first Thursday in May.
Basic Computer Class is being offered from 6 until 8 pm, Thursday, April 3. Call in advance to get your name on the list – we must have at least four participants.
Our fantastic board members and their friends are gearing up for their next delicious breakfast on Friday, April 4. Their pancakes, biscuits and gravy and breakfast tacos are so tasty, and the endless cups of coffee and juice so tantalizing. Don't know what folks enjoy more, the meal or the general camaraderie. Come, eat and enjoy visiting with friends – old and new. Serving begins at 7 am and continues until 9 am.
With the advent of this beautiful spring weather, taking care of our physical health becomes a real joy. Sharing this project with a friend(s) makes it much more pleasant and less of a chore. This is where Silver Sage comes in! We have groups of folks who walk three mornings a week. Many of the individuals continue their regime with low impact exercise at our facility on 803 Buck Creek Blvd. We also offer yoga and Left Foot Line Dancing. Stop by and pick up a monthly calendar of events for times. Let's get “fitfully crazy” this spring – physically, that is!
We are about to complete National Meals on Wheels Month. We just can't say enough about the virtues of this program. Meals on Wheels services some of the most ingenious, caring and appreciative citizens in our area. These folks are not “old,” they are “matured” and may have a physical drawback, which keeps them homebound. They may be widowed and living alone, unable to cook for themselves as they once did, and perhaps just a little bit lonely.
Meals on Wheels offers a hot nutritious meal daily, five days a week. The volunteers who deliver the meals are privileged to visit with their clients, share a smile, a story and a bit of love. Silver Sage needs volunteer drivers for our Meals on Wheels program, and monetary donations are always welcomed. If you would like to help with this very gratifying program, come by Silver Sage Corral or give us a call at 830-796-4969.
It's time for April birthdays! We have a bunch of “youngsters”" celebrating between April 1 and that "dreaded" April 15! The list includes Lilly Abbott, Cotton Adorno, Linda Bachmeier, David Beven, Roger Bolduc, James Brandt, Mark Bucalo, Anita Cortez, Patricia Dechant, Carol Duncan, Robert Duncan, Donna Given, Clarence Hall, Edgar Harding, Mary Hickernell, Louis Kieschnick, Roy King, Linda Lemus, Eugene Lesperance, Maudeen Marks, Lorraine McVey, Lewis Moore, Victor Nienenhuis, Penny Payne, Beverly Powell, Jewel Reid, Betty Ringling, Buddy Sandidge, Dollie Schoernert, Betty Steves, Connie Van Matre,Gerry Walker, Faye Wells, Lee Wilcox and Judy Willacker. Six of you fine folks will probably be the only ones “celebrating” on IRS Day!
And for all of you: “You know you're getting older when … you feel your corns more than your oats; your actions creak louder than your words; your eyes are still perfect but your friends are getting blurry.”
    Have a Happy April birthday!

Take a deep breath. Do you smell the freshness in the air? Do you feel the warmth of the sun and see the migratory birds returning and the bright new flowers? Not only is today the first day of spring, but also Easter is just a few days away – a special treat this year!
And, speaking of Easter – Silver Sage Corral will be closed tomorrow, Good Friday, March 21. Meals will not be available here nor will they be delivered. However, we’ll be back on schedule Monday.
And, while on the subject of meals, this is a reminder that our chefs prepare and freeze leftover meals daily. Available for only $3, the meals are ready to pop in the microwave to thaw and heat up. If you have guests coming for Easter or Spring Break, these frozen meals would be ideal to have on hand. Wouldn’t you rather visit with your loved ones than cook in the kitchen? Sounds good to me!
It takes lots of drivers for the many routes that deliver to the 70-plus wonderful friends who participate in the Meals on Wheels Program. We’re in dire need of folks to drive and deliver these meals every weekday. You don’t need to be at the Center until about 10:30 am, so you can still sleep in. This rewarding task takes only an hour or so out of your day. You can visit with some of Bandera’s finest citizens, spread a little cheer and have the satisfaction that these folks will receive a nutritious, hot meal which they might not get if it weren’t for you. Think about it. If you can drive one day a week or more, call the Center at 830-796-4969. Remember – not only will you help others, but you will also be the recipient of the true benefits!
The Writer‘s Group meets at 4 pm this afternoon, March 20, and the Basic Computer Class meeting this evening from 6 pm to 8 pm. If you enjoy the writing, but never learned about computers, this is a great opportunity for you!
Don’t forget our Birthday Potluck at the Silver Sage, beginning at 11:30 am, Tuesday, March 25. The menu includes oven-fried chicken with roasted potatoes. Plan to come and honor our March Birthday Buddies. Remember to bring a side dish to complement the chicken and ‘taters.
And what a treat follows immediately after the Birthday Bash – the Kenney Family presenting musical selections. This very talented family sings and plays various instruments as well. Make sure you’re here for their performance!
A great way to end next week is with the Friday Nite Jam Session, which begins at 6:30 pm, on March 28. It’s great fun for everyone.
Happy spring to all of you, and may your Easter be very special for you as well!

St. Patrick's Day is just around the corner! To all our Irish friends out there: "Erin Go Braugh!" May you have a very happy St. Paddy's Day!
We understand the Coushatta Gambling Trip was a huge success and everyone had a really good time! Well, not to worry – we will honor the little saying, "What happens on the bus...stays on the bus!”
On Friday, March 14, hearing tests will be given here at Silver Sage from 9 am until 12 noon. There is no cost for these tests and, if a hearing aid is needed, you are under no obligation to buy from those giving the exams– although they will be available. For more information, call our office at 830-796-4969.
The Silver Sage Corral and the Baptist Church are co-sponsoring "Angel Food Ministries,” a program which offers a menu of quality fresh and frozen foods each month, enough for a month's supply for one person, or for a family of four for one to two weeks for only $30. The menu consists of a variety of meats, vegetables, fruits, breads and deserts. If you buy the $30 menu, you are eligible to also get three units of meats for only $20. This is all top-quality food – no seconds, dented cans, day olds, etcetera. This program is available to anyone, regardless of age or income. You may get more information by going to the web site at www.angelfoodministries.com or calling Silver Sage or the local Baptist Church. Our order deadline is March 17.
If you are a fan of Oprah Winfrey, you have probably heard about the book, "The New Earth," written by Eckhart Tolle. The contents of the 10 chapters of this book are being presented live via web broadcast at 8 pm each Monday. We are told that this is the largest online viewing of a book, with millions of viewers around the world. Silver Sage is offering group viewings of this book via internet for the next eight Mondays. Debby Gibson will be leading group discussions of "The New Earth" each Monday at 7 pm, followed by a group online viewing. Won't you come join us?
We have beginning computer students around the corral who are on their way to becoming real "gurus!” Our next classes will be March 18 and March 20 at 6 pm. You can still sign up for beginner classes. Give us a call and learn the basics of computing!
It's not too late to take part in the Defensive Driving Program on March 18 and March 19. Classes will be held from 9:30 am to 11:30 am and 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm. We can accommodate as many as 30 folks in these classes – 17 have already signed up. Fee is only $10 for both days. These courses will sharpen your driving skills and most insurance companies offer discounted auto rates after completion of this course. Sign up today!
For those of you who frequent the Silver Sage Corral Thrift Store, we have some good news! The thrift store has a new manager. As we attract more volunteers and more donations (and more customers), the store will bring in more benefits to the senior center's Meals On Wheels program. Please stop by and see us. The store is located between the Aguas Calientes Mexican Restaurant and the Gone Quiltin' fabric store at the strip mall on Highway 16 South. What we need now are more volunteers to work the store in addition to donations of clean, gently used items for resale. Come check us out, say hello and help support your local seniors.
We recently received the donation of a pool table for our facility. The table needs a new top and new felt at a cost of about $500. Silver Sage monies are almost entirely used for our Senior Meals Program and Meals on Wheels. If you, or someone you know, could do the repairs or would like to donate toward the cost of the job, please give us a call.
As always, we would be most appreciative.
Hey! It's birthday time again – for our friends born between March 16 and March 31! Congratulations to Barbara Alexander, Elloyd Barth, Debby Bussey, Margarita DeLaGuerra, Linda Dubose, Suellen Ehrmann, Billie Harding, Marcie Herbst, Lillie Holliman, Edward Jank, John Lynch, David Mayer, Lawrence Nuckles, Delia Ortiz, Delmar Potter, Sherry Rogers Sally Rodriguez, Barbara Sollinger, Jason Stein, Kathy Stevens, George Storjohann, Etta Sutton, Connie Twohig, Sherry Waitrek, William Waller, Ruby Weik, Diane Whitney and Pat Wood.
A happy birthday toast for all of you – "May your blessings outnumber the shamrocks that grow and may troubles avoid you wherever you go!"
A special toast for John, born on St. Patrick's Day. "As you slide down the banister of life may the splinters never point the wrong way."

And, as a “PS" to the above note, we feel it’s only fitting to thank Ms. Hilton who, along with Angelika Inzanti, served as chairmen of the event. Silver Sage Director Ann Bishop and her executive assistant, Pam Thatcher, also deserve thanks for the many hours of hard work they put in to make the occasion such a memorable one. And, we can't forget the other Silver Sage Board of Directors as they all pitched in and helped in their own ways. It truly achieved the goal of raising a substantial amount of money for our Wheels on Meals program!

… the little old lady you help across the street is your wife.
… your children begin to look middle-aged.
… you find a person attractive because they can get three cups of tea from the same tea bag.
… and, you can remember what you did yesterday by what hurts today!”

Here we are, winding up another busy month for the center. But what fun we have while staying busy!
Patrice Doerries, senior CARES coordinator with the Hill Country Crisis Council, will present the last of this year’s topics of the Good Neighbor Programs at Silver Sage Monday, March 3. This month’s topic will be “Aging with Grace,” and will be presented from 12:30 until 1:30 pm. Everyone come join us for this program and let Doerries know how much we all appreciate the time she spends with us.
The fine volunteers from Comprehensive Physical Therapy and Bandera Fitness will be here Tuesday morning, March 4 for their wonderful hand treatment clinic, beginning at 10 am. The clinic is free and volunteers from the gym treat you with a warm paraffin hand bath and hand massage with a soothing cream. They will give you extra special consideration if you let them know you suffer from swollen joints and arthritis. Isn’t it time to “treat” yourself? Men as well as women enjoy the benefits from this clinic. Hope to see you there!
Our Computer Classes for Beginners will be held Tuesday and Thursday, March 4 and 6 at 6 pm. You’re not going to just sit and listen to someone talk about computers – these classes are “hands on.” You will leave the classes feeling good about your accomplishments and ready to enjoy the “world of computing!” Call the office at 830-796-4969 for questions. We will have a Foot Clinic Thursday, March 6, at 10 am. After that, they will be held every other month with the next one in May. Like the hand clinic, this is free of charge and is a wonderful opportunity to have your toenails trimmed and your feet pampered. Don’t forget your towel!
Friday, March 7, our Board of Directors will prepare and serve their delicious “First Friday Breakfast,” including breakfast tacos, fluffy biscuits (with sausage gravy to die for!) or golden brown pancakes with a side of sausage or bacon. Breakfast is served with coffee, orange juice and a smile! Everyone is welcome. Why don’t you join us – serving begins at 7 am and continues until 9 am. We do “take-out” orders too. It’s fun to treat your employees and co-workers every now and then! It makes them feel happy, and you’ll feel good, too!
It’s not too late to register for the Defensive Driving Course being taught by an instructor from Kerrville. The classes will be held on March 18 and 19, from 9:30 until 11:30 am and, after a break for lunch, will resume from 12:30 until 2:30 pm. Why not take that lunch break right here in the dining room of the Silver Sage? Our meals are tasty, nutritious and very economical. Please call in advance so our fine chefs will know how many meals to prepare. You must register for these classes, so why not let the person who handles your registration know that you will eat with us as well – you know, “Kill two birds with one stone!”
While on the subject of food and the kitchen, we need to take a moment for a little “commercial break.” Once again, we are seeking volunteers to assist our fine kitchen staff. If you have a couple of free hours a week, perhaps you could help these folks out. Not only do the cooks prepare in-house meals for those who come to Silver Sage for their noon meal, but they prepare and package 70 or more hot lunches for Meals on Wheels recipients five days per week. If there are only two or three people in the kitchen, this can be a real chore. They could use help Tuesday and Wednesday, but Thursday is when a few extra hands would really be appreciated! It would only be for one or two hours. Give us a call if you have questions or want to volunteer.
On Friday, March 14 we will have a Hearing Clinic at the Corral, beginning at 9 am. For more information, call the office.
Our Birthday Bash will be held on March 25 this month. And from now on, all the “Birthday Bash” luncheons will be on the last Tuesday of the month. Just thought you’d like to know!
    Have a good week!

We have birthdays to recognize! Fine folks celebrating between February 20 to February 29 include Janette Adams, Lawrence Dechant, Donald Dubbs, Leona Field, Vera Fox, Patricia Hamilton, Patricia Jones, Mary Kotthoff, Bernice Light, Elaine Miheve, Virginia Murphy, Rita Newman, Agnes Odom, Neva Reed, Billie Rico, Susan Rogers, Lawrence Tetzloff, Jo White, Doris Wickliffe, Donald Witkowski, Jesse Wright, Connie Young and Richard Young. Happy Birthday to you all!
And, two of our birthday girls were born in a Leap Year! Leona and Bernice, start making your plans to go to the big Birthday Party for all “Leapies” or “29ers” held in Anthony, Texas, the Leap Year Capital of the World – according to Google and Wikipedia. Anthony is located in the far western tip of El Paso County.
Our source tells us also that statistically, only about 200,000 in the U.S. are born on Feb. 29, or 1 in 1,461. That’s less than 1 percent of the population! Just thought you’d like to know this information! Happy birthday to all of you fine folks, especially our two “Leapies”!

Well, here it is – time for hearts and flowers, candy, “secret” Valentines and notes of love and endearment.
As Plato said – a few years ago – “At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet.”
Guess that's how the proverbial poem, “Roses are red, Violets are blue …” came about. Don't you wish you had a nickel for every card you ever got through the years with that little ditty on it? Or, maybe a quarter!
Anyone who attended the Silver Sage Corral’s annual Sweethearts Dinner and Dance this past weekend would certainly agree that it was truly a portrait of beautiful folks, a very special place and wonderful food and music. So much love and caring was shown in the donation, bidding and buying of auction items. Bandera County truly does love and care for its senior citizens, exemplified by the money brought in for our Senior Meals on Wheels Program. Our thanks to all who participated in any way!
And we are excited about keeping the theme of “love” throughout the month of February! Our talented Bandera Riverside Players will offer another wonderful production at the center, entitled “Love Letters.” This unique theatrical experience takes place Saturday, Feb. 23. Wine, cheese and good company will be enjoyed at 7:30 pm, followed by the play. Seating is limited, so make your reservation at 830-796-4969. Tickets are $25 per person, with all proceeds donated to the Meals on Wheels Program.
As promised, our Computer Classes for Beginners are now scheduled! They will begin at 6 pm on Tuesday and Thursday, March 4 and 6, and last for approximately two hours. Mike Smith, technical coordinator for Medina ISD and Texas Public Radio’s Region 20, will teach the classes. The course will be "hands on" and very basic, with a nominal fee of $10. We can accommodate up to eight people, so call in advance to reserve a computer.
Have you become frustrated working on you income taxes? If your annual income was $45,000 or less, you may qualify to have your taxes done for free. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program of San Antonio has offered to help locally and at several locations in San Antonio. Call Silver Sage for more information. This program is offered through April 15.
We’re still looking for a used or new microwave oven for our kitchen. If you’d like to donate one, give us a call and we’ll gladly make arrangements to take it off your hands!
Our newly started – and already filled – lapidary classes are going great guns! Come see their work – they have created beautiful jewelry, bolo ties and more! They have been extremely productive!
We’re planning a number of birding trips in the near future. Walking tours from the center are being considered as well as trips to Lost Maples and the nearby State Natural Area. We need to have at least four or five people to get started. Call our office for more information or to get your name on the list of prospective birders.
Get out your calendars – we have lots of dates to remember.
    February 14 - Writer's Group meets at 4 pm.
February 18 - Silver Sage will be closed for President's Day. If you are a Meals on Wheels recipient and need an extra meal, order it by Thursday, Feb.14, for Friday delivery.
February 19 - Birthday Bash Luncheon, 11:30 am., to celebrate February birthdays. This is a pot luck. Please bring a dish to go with the spaghetti and meatballs that will be prepared by the kitchen chefs.
February 21 - Third Thursday Talk at 11 am, featuring either story telling or story reading.
February 22 - Friday Nite Jam Session at 6:30 pm.
February 28 and 29 - Bus trip to Kinder, Louisiana. To reserve a seat on the bus, your payment must be made by Monday, Feb. 25. Remember, the bus leaves at 6:30 am on Thursday!
To all you Sweeties out there, Happy Valentine's Day. We love you all! And remember, “True love doesn't have a happy ending, because true love never ends.”

Hope you have your "dancing duds" ready to go and you’re resting up and ready for a really good time! The exciting Silver Sage Corral annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance is just a few days away, and it's going to be so much fun!
Bring your checkbook or some extra cash along for the live and silent auctions scheduled for the evening. There will be lots of really neat items to bid on – and don't forget, the beautifully decorated cakes from the cake contest will be auctioned as well. All proceeds will go toward the Meals for Seniors and Meals on Wheels programs at Silver Sage Corral. What a wonderful cause!
The Sweetheart Dinner and Dance will be held from 6:30 until 11:30 pm, Saturday, Feb. 9, at The Farm Country Club on FM 2828. The Almost Patsy Cline Band will provide musical entertainment. Hope you have your tickets – we will see you all there!
Remember a couple of weeks ago we mentioned that after the dinner and dance there would be a "surprise" in store for you?
Well, it's happening Saturday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 pm at Silver Sage Corral! The wonderful Bandera Riverside Players will present for your pleasure "Love Letters," featuring the star of "Kate and the Writer.” Prior to the play you will enjoy wines and cheeses – all for only $25! What a wonderful way to spend a Saturday evening! Do make plans to attend.
The Riverside Players are donating all income from the play to our Meals on Wheels program. It offers nutritious hot meals to seniors and homebound residents of Bandera County. If it weren't for this program, many of these fine folks would probably be residing in retirement or nursing home facilities. Kudos to everyone associated with the Bandera Riverside Players!
Quite often our kitchen staff has leftover food from the in-house meals served at Silver Sage Corral Monday through Friday. These "extra" meals are packaged and frozen the same day and are available for purchase. The cost of the frozen meal has been $2, but due to rising costs of food and packaging, the frozen meals are now $3. This is still a good price for an entrée and two sides packaged to be frozen and reheated in the microwave. To order meals, call the office at 830-796-4969.
A reminder that the "My Health Matters" classes for persons living with chronic diseases and their family members or caregivers begins from 9 until 11:30 am today, Thursday, Feb. 7, at Silver Sage. Classes will be held for six weeks. For more information or to sign up, call the office.
We need a microwave oven for our kitchen. If you or someone you know would like to donate one, call us at 830-796-4969 and we’ll make arrangements to pick it up.
Our lapidary classes given by Lee Adams are going great! In fact, we had such a good turnout we were able to create three different groups of people learning and creating! Come by and see the beautiful jewelry being fashioned by these fine folks. The groups meet on Mondays at 1 pm.
Notice to bridge players – bridge is now being played at 9 am Thursday instead of Friday. We understand this is a permanent change. We'll see you all on Thursdays now!
Sign up soon for the Coushatta gambling trip scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Feb. 28 and 29. We need a total of 45 folks to make the trip to Kinder, Louisiana. The cost is $55 per person for a double room or $110 for a single. This price is all-inclusive, covering the bus trip, motel room with a free continental breakfast and entry to Coushatta. Give us a call here at the center for more information and to add your name to the list!
That's it for another week – see you at the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance!

The month of February is quickly approaching which means the Silver Sage Corral annual Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance is just around the corner! A lot of effort by volunteers goes into this annual event. It’s all for our Senior Meals Program and Meals on Wheels – a great service for our neighbors, in house and at home. It provides nutritious, delicious hot meals five days a week, every week of the year, with only a few holiday exceptions. We are inviting you to help us out – by having a lot of fun.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, from 6:30 until 11:30 pm, Silver Sage’s Sweetheart Dinner and Dance will take place at The Farm Country Club on FM 2828. The evening will consist of a wonderful buffet dinner, dancing to the renowned Almost Patsy Cline Band, presentation of cakes in the Valentine Cake Decorating Contest, live and silent auctions and, perhaps best of all, sharing an evening with close friends and beautiful people.
Our Left Foot Line Dancing classes continue each Wednesday, beginning at 1 pm. What a great way to practice for the big event Feb. 9.
Computer classes for beginners are almost ready to start. If you know nothing about computers – don’t even know where the “switch” is to turn them on – and you’re just itching to get to those solitaire games, this class is for you. Maybe all you want to do besides play games is learn how to type a letter with the word processor, or send and receive e-mail. Get ready, because classes will start very soon! Keep an eye on this column and we’ll announce the sign up date.
A reminder of Silver Sage’s “weather policy.” If BISD classes have been called off due to ice, snow or excessive rain, we will be closed as well. If it is too dangerous for the busses to pick up children, it is too dangerous for our drivers, instructors and workers to be out on the roads as well. Listen to the news on radio and TV stations for school closings if you are in doubt – and remember, if the schools are closed due to weather conditions, Silver Sage is also closed.
    Dates to remember
Feb. 1 - First Friday Breakfast prepared and served by the board members and volunteers of Silver Sage. Serving begins at 7 am and continues until 9 am. Come join us!
Friday afternoon movies have been canceled until further notice due to lack of interest.
Feb. 4 - Patrice Doerries with the Good Neighbor Program presents “Stress Management,” 12:30 pm until 1:30 pm. Open to all.
Feb. 5 - Hand Treatment Clinic sponsored by Comprehensive Physical Therapy and Bandera Fitness, 10 am. Clinic is Free!
Feb. 7 - Free foot clinic, 10 am.
Feb. 8 - Valentine Cake Decorating Contest. Have your cake at Silver Sage by noon.
Feb. 9 - Annual Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance at The Farm Country Club, 6:30 pm until 11:30 pm.
Feb. 28 and Feb. 29 - Gambling trip to Kinder, Louisana. Call 830-796-4969 to sign up! The sign up sheet is filling quickly, which means bus seats are being taken. If you think you might want to go, come by or call to get your name on the list. It’s so much fun!
It’s already birthday time again! We are acknowledging friends who celebrate their special days from Feb, 1 thru Feb. 19. The list includes Robert Alexander, Ruby Anderson, Delores Behrens, Nakita Bickle, Lenora Bivens, Katherine Borchers, David Burell, Paul Castillo, Beverly Cielencki, Carole Clay, Lynda Cook, Judy Fillpot, Medina Goodenough, Adeline Herbst, Joyce Lloyd, Willie Maxwell, Pat Mayfield, James McClellan, Jean McGuire, Patrick O’Neill, Joyce Painter, Janet Payne, Hanelore Putegnat, Diana Roche, Cindy Stein, Joy Stein, Becky Tompkins, James Watts, Kenneth Weller, Paula Whetstein, Sidney Wilmot and Bobby Wilson. Happy birthday to you all. We leave you with the following quote – “The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight, because by then your body and your fat have gotten to be really good friends.” That should make you feel a lot better!
    Have a great year!

Listen! What's that strange noise we're hearing? It's not "Trick-or-Treaters" coming up the walk. It's not "hoof beats on the roof." Nor is it "fire crackers and sparklers" getting ready to bring in the New Year! Shhh—. Me thinks it might be Cupid -- tip-toeing around looking for "sweethearts" to bring to the Silver Sage Corral Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance. If you hear him shoot his arrow, don't jump out of the way. Let him "hit" you.
You may just be in for the time of your life. Yes, that time is fast approaching — Feb. 9 is just a couple of weeks away. Our annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance has a reputation for being one of the social events of Bandera County. We understand the tables for eight are going fast. The cost of the table is $200 which breaks down to $25 per person. If you come individually or as a pair, the cost is $30 per person. Either way, you are getting a real deal. Why a good deal? Consider the meal.
Homer and Kathy Stevens of The Farm Country Club have a wonderful facility which we like to refer to as "Country Elegant" and very conducive to having a great time. They and their crew will serve a delicious buffet dinner at approximately 6:30 pm. The meal consists of pork loin, smoked chicken, wild rice, green beans, salad, dessert, coffee, tea, setups, beer or BYOB. That alone is worth $25 - $30.
But did we mention the dance? The Almost Patsy Cline Band will do the honors of presenting some of the best music in the state of Texas. Dancing will be from 7:30 pm until 11:30 pm. If boot-scootin' is your thing, or you just like to listen to fine music this is a deal for you.
Don't forget the live and silent auctions. Many wonderful items have been donated for you to bid on and take home — if you're lucky. There will be both fun and beautiful items and useful items and tasty items. The real fun is in the bidding.
May we remind you that you need to be getting ready to bake that very special, very beautiful, very tasty Valentine Cake for the annual Cake Decorating Contest. This contest is one of the highlights of the evening.
First, second and third place winners will be awarded for beauty and originality. The cakes will be part of the auction. Be sure to pick up an entry form from the center at 803 Buck Creek Blvd.
All the above is included in the $25-$30 price mentioned. Is that not a "real deal?" To top it off, this is the place to gather with friends and make new friends — friends of all ages! This is what really puts "fun" into fundraising. Remember, monies made at this event go into Silver Sage's Meals for Seniors and Meals on Wheels Program. That really makes it all worthwhile.
Our Friday Afternoon at the Movies this week features a "surprise" movie! Join us, the movie is free. Pop corn and sodas are available as well! Show time is 12:30 pm.
We have our Friday Nite Jam this Friday here at the Corral at 6:30 pm. Don't miss it.
Our "Birthday Bash Potluck Lunch," honoring all January birthday "youngsters," will be held at 11:30 am Tuesday, Jan. 29. Martha and the kitchen crew will furnish chuck roast with mashed potatoes and gravy and garlic toast.
You are asked to bring a side dish of a vegetable, salad or dessert. The meal is free if you have a January birthday or if you bring a dish. A donation box will be available if you would like to make a contribution.
Our good board of directors and volunteers have been working hard at the Silver Sage Thrift Store located in the strip mall on Highway 16 South. They have been cleaning out and organizing all items in the store to bring you a "special event." On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Jan. 29, Jan. 30 and Jan. 31, Silver Sage is having a "Big Blow-Out Sale" featuring all items in the store at exorbitantly low prices. You will have to see it to believe it. Our store hours are from 10 am until 3 pm. Check it out.
Our Good Neighbor Program, sponsored by the Hill Country Crisis Council, will present a program Monday, Feb. 4, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Topic will be "Stress Management" and the presenter will be the Senior CARES Coordinator Patrice Doerries. Please plan to join us.
It's not too early to be planning to go with us via bus to the Coushatta Casino in Kinder, Louisiana, Feb. 28 and Feb. 29. Only 40 seats are available and the bus is filling up fast. Call Ann, Pam or one of the volunteers in the office at 830-796-4969 to make your reservation. This is really an exciting and fun two-day trip.
Pool players, take note. A pool table has been donated to the center. It will find its home in the dining room when it arrives. Once it is in place, all we will need are some pool players. Call for more information.
And finally, you are asked to watch this column for a "unique" theatrical experience presented by the Bandera Riverside Players coming up in February. We are excited — and you will be too! Stay "tuned."

Looking back 10, maybe 20 years ago, do you remember wondering what retired people, senior citizens or “old people” do all day long? Boredom must surely set in, right? Well, let me tell you – the seniors around Silver Sage are certainly not “old.” And who in the world has time to be bored? Just fasten your seat belts and come along with us. We have so many things going on here on Buck Creek Blvd., it’ll “knock your socks off!”
We have a gambling trip to Kinder, La., coming up Feb. 28 and Feb. 29. We’ve been told this is sure to be a “lucky” trip – look at the date. This is leap year! The bus leaves here at 6:30 am Thursday, Feb. 28, and returns Friday night, Feb. 29, at approximately 10:30 pm. The price of the trip is $55 per person for a double room or $110 for a single. Price includes bus fare, motel accommodations and entry to Coushatta. You may park your car in the lighted parking lot here at the Corral. We need 40 people to sign up in order to go. Start talking this up to your friends – these trips are so much fun!
We have a firm date for the “My Health Matters” classes we have been promising you. This is for people with chronic diseases, their families and care-givers. Up to 20 people can be accommodated and we still have room for a few more. The first class will be held Thursday, Feb. 7, from 9 am until 11:30 am. Classes will continue for a total of six weeks, once a week. In these sessions, you will learn how to deal with the changes in your life due to disease and how to make the best of your situation. The presenter has stated that these classes “will change your life.” If you haven’t already done so, give us a call today at 830-796-4969 to enroll.
We are a week closer to the Silver Sage Corral Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance at The Farm Country Club. The date is Saturday, Feb. 9. from 6:30 pm to 11:30 pm. There will be a delicious buffet dinner, dancing to the Almost Patsy Cline Band and live and silent auctions of all kinds of really wonderful items. And don’t forget the Valentine Cake Decorating Contest. You should be “practicing” that special recipe now. Who knows? You may be the big winner that night. Pick up your entry form at the Silver Sage office Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. While there, you can get your tickets for the gala. They are $30 per person or $200 for a table of eight.
Carmen Gascot of Comprehensive Physical Therapy and Bandera Fitness has invited everyone to attend a Balance Screening and Fall Prevention at her gym Wednesday, Jan. 23. The screening is free.
Remember the 9-1-1 cell phones we have been giving out to seniors and those living alone? Our first big “batch” has already been distributed and we are into our second one. If you have received one of these recycled phones, we urge you to keep it strictly for emergency use. Please don’t let children play with it. The sheriff’s office has received some “9-1-1 calls” from kiddos playing games on the phones. If you have a phone to donate, you may drop it off here at the office. All personal information will be removed from the phone. If you prefer to remove it yourself, go to the web site www.recelluar.com/recycling/date_eraser.
We are still looking for a web page designer to get us set up on the Internet and post our activities and schedule of events. If you can help out, give us a call.
We are now selling frozen meals (extra food cooked for our Meals on Wheels and daily lunches frozen same day as prepared). Due to an increase in costs, we raised the price of these meals from $2 to $3. That's still quite a deal for a nutritious, delicious meal.
Some dates for you to remember -

Have you noticed? Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year are barely over and the store shelves are already stocked with Valentines and things for your "sweetie!" As if time doesn't go by fast enough anyway...
Guess we're just as bad here at Silver Sage. You know, it doesn't take much for folks around to celebrate. And we are so excited about Valentine's Day that our little "cupids" are already scurrying around getting ready for our annual Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance, Saturday, Feb. 9, at The Farm Country Club. The evening includes a buffet dinner, dancing to the Almost Patsy Cline Band and decorated cake contest, in addition to live and silent auctions. It all benefits the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center, primarily our Meals for Seniors and Meals on Wheels programs.
Tickets are $30 per person, or $200 for a table of eight. Call 830-796-4969 to make reservations.
We need to talk about our cake decorating contest, part of our above-mentioned dinner and dance. It's time to start thinking about the kind of cake you want to bake this year. You don't have to be a senior citizen to enter the contest — it is open to all ages, with men and women alike are eligible to compete. You are asked to stay with the Valentine theme and make an authentic homemade cake. Cakes will be judged Friday, Feb. 8, then displayed at the festivities at The Farm the next day.
Cakes will be judged for originality and beauty, and the top three cakes will be awarded ribbons. All entries will be available for sale in the Feb. 9 evening auction.
Pull out those cook books, thumb through magazines, recall your mom's and grandma's special recipes and let those creative juices flow! Let's make this the biggest and "bestest" cake decorating contest Silver Sage Corral ever had! Come by to pick up your entry form at 803 Buck Creek Blvd. If you have any questions, call 830-796-4969.
The Bandera Riverside Players will be meeting at the corral Jan. 10 at 6:30 pm. (Remember these fine folks? They're the ones who put on the delightful "Santa's Magic Timepiece," in December.) They will begin planning their next production. They tell us new members are always welcome to their "active theater group." If there is a little thespian hiding inside of you, come meet with them and see what they are all about. This might be your chance to shine!
We have had a canasta request at the center. Folks are signing up and beginning their games. What a fun game! Come join our canasta group — they play Mondays and Wednesdays at 12:30 pm.
Our domino and 42 players are going strong every Thursday, right after lunch at 12:30 pm. And our bridge players meet every Friday morning at 9 am. Come get in on the games!
Sources tell me that our director and her assistant are working on some gambling trips for this year. These trips are such fun! Start talking to your friends and let's be sure to have a busload ready to go when the dates are announced!
Some other dates to put on your calendar:
Jan. 11 - Friday Afternoon Movie at 12:30 pm, "Hope Floats" — a "light" love story. Movie is free. Popcorn and drinks are available.
    Jan. 15 - Bingo at 12:30 pm.
Jan. 17 - Third Thursday Talk at 11 am. "Surprise" topic!
    Jan. 17 - Writers Group, 4 pm.
Jan. 30 - Deadline for reservations for Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance, 4 pm.
Feb. 7 - Life Line Health Screening. Call 800-779-6353 for an appointment.
Feb. 8 - Judging of Valentine-themed decorated cakes.
Feb. 9 - Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center's "Sweetheart Benefit Dinner Dance" at The Farm Country Club from 6:30 pm until 11:30 pm.
That's what's happening at the Silver Sage Corral! Why don't you come by and visit us?
We would love to see you!
