    When I’m Gone
When I come to the end of my journey
And I travel my last weary mile,
Just forget if you can, that I ever frowned
    And remember only the smile.
Forget unkind words I have spoken
Remember some good I have done,
Forget that I ever had heartache
And remember I've had loads of fun.
Forget that I've stumbled and blundered
And sometimes fell by the way,
Remember I have fought some hard battles
And won, ere the close of the day.
Then forget to grieve for my going,
I would not have you sad for one day,
But in summer just gather some flowers
And remember the place where I lay.
And come in the shade of the evening
When the sun paints the sky in the west
Stand for a few moments beside me
    And remember only my best.
With love to all, from Gwynette Lackey

After a short illness, George Morgan Maass Jr. left this world to join his Heavenly Father Monday, Feb. 4.
He was born Jan. 12, 1931, in Bandera, to George Morgan and Treva Blanche Maass.
From 1951 to 1953, George served in the United States Air Force. He married Alta Marie Stodgehill on March 3, 1962, in Bandera.
A member of University Park Baptist Church, George worked as a surveyor in the geo-physical field for 32 years in Saudi Arabia, as well as in the lower 48 states.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and golfer. His father took him hunting when he was four-years-old, telling everyone George was “his little hunting buddy.” The nickname “Buddy” stuck and, to this day, most of his family and friends from Bandera refer to him as Buddy.
George passed his love for the outdoors on to his son and grandchildren. Another of his great loves was music. George played trumpet in high school and while in the Air Force. He later taught himself to play the fiddle and the mandolin.
George lived a full and wonderful life, but at the age of 71, he realized that life was not complete, and he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. With that acceptance, he was assured that he would be spending eternity in Heaven with God, proving that it is never too late to accept the Love of God.
George was preceded in death by his parents, brother-in-law Chet Duft of Missouri and his stepdaughter Shelia Harris of Odessa.
He is survived by his loving wife Marie Maass of Odessa; sister Helen Duft of Missouri; son Brother Wayne Maass and his wife, Robbie, of Odessa; stepdaughter Sharon Berry of Florida; loving grandchildren Melissa Barnard, Lyndsey Maass and David Maass, all of Odessa; Bill Berry, Ryan Berry and Sharla Rogers of Florida; and son-in-law John Harris of Odessa.
We will cherish the memories we have of you from your life on this earth. Though we wish you could have stayed longer, we look forward to the day when we will all be reunited with you in Heaven.
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Family visitation was Friday, Feb. 8, at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home. Celebration of George’s life was held Saturday, Feb. 9, also at Sunset Memorial Funeral Home with Brother Ivy Shelton officiating.
Pallbearers were Jim Mangold, Jerry Anderson, Wayne Tanner, Terry Crouch, Kelly Evans and John Harris. Military honors were rendered at the graveside services by members of VFW Post 4372.

Published Feb. 14, 2008
Surrounded by her family, Laura “Lolly” P. Powell, of Utopia, Texas, passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 11, at the age of 98.
Born in San Augustine, Jan. 30, 1910, Lolly was witness to a world of change that included the sinking of the Titanic, the first suffrage parade, the great flu epidemic, both world wars, the Great Depression and the rise of the automobile and airplane. In the Roaring Twenties, her face exemplified a generation. In her long life, the world changed from a disconnected collection of countries to an interconnected mass community, and Lolly took these changes in stride.
She was a tireless worker, dedicated mother and truly amazing woman. Among her many talents, Lolly was a master handcraft artist, creating exquisite handwork of all kinds, especially crocheting and quilting. She made many magnificent quilts – one of which was documented in a book of the history of Texas quilts. She was also an accomplished creator of wedding cakes, which she baked and decorated for those dearest to her.
Lolly held varied jobs, including the position of dietician for Alvin Memorial Hospital and manager of the cafeterias for the entire Alvin Independent School District. To support her family, she raised rabbits, canned produce that she grew in a huge garden, made all her children’s clothes and cared for her ailing husband for many months.
She possessed an endless amount of energy, needing only a few hours of sleep a night. She was admired for her inexhaustible spirit, her tenacity, her perseverance and her dedication to her family.
Lolly was an Eastern Star Member and her husband was a Mason in the Alvin Lodge. For virtually all of her many years, she remained remarkably healthy. Well into her 90s, she rarely saw a doctor and single-handedly planted and harvested her acre garden. She had a green thumb and could make any plant thrive, no matter how sickly. She attributed her long, healthy life to living simply and with the seasons.
After her beloved husband passed away, Lolly lived by herself for more than 40 years, teaching handwork classes at the Senior Citizen Center in Utopia. In her last years, she lived with her daughter and then her son.
Lolly was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Grady Bunyan Powell. She is survived by her two children and their spouses, June (Powell) and Omer North and Roy and Sylvia Powell; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed.
