Weather watcher honored

Tarpley resident Anton Haner (right) received a prestigious award from Joe Arellano Jr. of the National Weather Service for 25 continuous years of data collection.

In Tuna, Texas — purportedly the third smallest town in the state — denizen Harold Dean Lattimer delivered the daily weather report. As "radio personalities" Arles Struvie and Thurston Wheelis remarked, even though a water spout over Bumiller's Pond picked him up and dropped Lattimer into Dewey County, "He still got that (weather) report in on time."
In Anton Haner, the tiny township of Tarpley has its own Harold Dean Lattimer. Since 1981, Haner has contributed daily precipitation counts and occasional temperature readings to the National Weather Service.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, Joe Arellano Jr., NWS meteorologist-in-charge, presented the veteran volunteer weather observer with the prestigious John Campanius Holm award.
This year, only 26 of these tributes will be given out across the entire United States. "Anton Haner has shown continued dedication to his community, the National Weather Service and the nation," Arellano said, commending him for his continued commitment to excellence while performing his observation duties. Since becoming a cooperative observer over a quarter of a century years ago — it'll be 26 years next month — Haner has provided timely and accurate weather data to the NWS Forecast Office. Located in New Braunfels, the local NWS office serves San Antonio and Austin.
According to Arellano, Haner has continued a nearly unbroken record of daily precipitation observations.
"His exceptional record-keeping and reporting continues a history of cooperative observation at the Tarpley station dating to its establishment in 1937," he said. "Mr. Haner's daily reports have been critical to the National Weather Service during both severe weather and floods. His warnings are essential to saving people's lives and protecting their property."
Clearly pleased with the prestigious award, Haner said, "It's an honor to receive this award. I was nominated for this a year ago, but figured it was just one of the little things they give out instead of pay." He continued, "I know people wrote letters (of recommendation) and it is greatly appreciated. This is a great honor."
In an interview, Haner said he began what soon morphed into his life's work "on a whim" to help out the community.
"The guy who had been doing it before wasn't doing such a great job and reporting like his should have. He said it took too much time. Well, it doesn't take any time at all."
According to Haner, three machines essentially do the work for him. One measures rainfall automatically with a tape that records precipitation every 15 minutes. Another measures rainfall manually using a dipstick that can pick up as little as 1/100 of an inch of precipitation.
"And that's what we had this morning (Nov. 14) — 1/100 an inch of rainfall," he said. A third machine measures temperatures.
He sends his data to the NWS station in New Braunfels by punching appropriate numbers on a landline telephone.
"If the weather is unusual, I call it in personally," he said. In Haner's estimation, the most unusual weather pattern in the last quarter of a century occurred three months ago when Tarpley received four inches of rain in half an hour. Official rainfall tabulation to date is 62 inches, he said.
"Someone once said, 'When you tell me the official rainfall, I didn't realize it really was official'," Haner recalled.
When Haner does take a rare day off, his daughter, who also lives on the family ranch, carries on the data-collecting duties.
Describing himself as "just tired," rather than retired, Haner moved to Bandera County in the early 1970, and has proudly been married "to the same woman" for 57 years. Born and raised on a dairy farm in Bexar County, Haner comes to his bucolic existence in Tarpley naturally.
In between dodging raindrops, Haner also found time to serve as chief of the Tarpley Volunteer Fire Department, a Bandera County paramedic, member of the Texas Farm Bureau Board of Directors and chairman of the Alamo Area Council of Governments.
He'a currently on boards of the Bandera County Farm Bureau, Grazing Land Conservation Initiative and Hill Country Prescribed Burning Association, as well as serving as vice president of the Bandera Resource Conservation and Development Council.
According to information from the NWS, the first reporting weather networks were set up in the 1890s when Congress established the US Weather Bureau. The Cooperative Observer Program began approximately 100 years ago.
Currently, more than 12,000 observers across the country carry on a tradition that has provided an exceptional record of historical climatological data.
Created in 1959, the Holm award is named for a Lutheran minister — the first person to take systematic weather observations in the American Colonies. Working without instruments, Holm made his observations at a site near Wilmington, Delaware, in1644 and 1645.
Although vowing to continue his weather reporting, Haner said, "I probably won't be able to do it for another 26 years."
No doubt, if a water spout picked Haner up from Tarpley and deposited him in Dewey County, he — like his Tuna counterpart, Harold Dean Lattimer — would "get that (weather) report in on time," too.
