Utopia School votes to support Emergency Services District
by Stephanie Day BCC Staff
Published Feb. 16, 2006
Utopia School Board members voted on Monday, Feb. 13 to allow the newly voted in Emergency Services District to use the UISD board meeting room for their meetings.
After 10 years of attempting to establish an Emergency Services District that includes Vanderpool and Utopia, voters were finally successful and the board has been established. The emergency services district will collect taxes to support the fire departments and emergency medical services within a four-county area that includes Uvalde County.
Utopia ISD board members also approved the senior class trip this year -- a skiing trip in Colorado during spring break. Because of spring break, Utopia's next school board meeting will be on Monday, March 20 at 7 p.m.
A school board election was called for May 13. Candidates have from Feb. 11 through March 13 to file for the two open positions now held by John Hutto and Ernie Moore. Joy Davenport will serve as the election judge.
Utopia ISD contracts extended include those for Principal Jim Phillips, Business Manager Karen Heideman and Tax Collector Dixie Dean.

Utopia School holds gym dedication
by Stephanie Day
Published Jan. 19, 2006
Debt free and open, the $1.4 million Utopia School gymnasium held a dedication ceremony on Friday, Jan. 13 during its homecoming game. The Buffaloes won all three basketball games and the dedication ceremony was sandwiched between winning games.
The new gym, built with a capacity of 500, was packed. The old gym, built in 1953 with a capacity of 200, will still be used for physical education classes and practices.
Utopia Superintendent John Walts introduced architect Andy Simpson, contractor Nathan Griggs and the school’s “Buffalo Thunder,” a new drum and trumpet core. Buffalo Thunder performed for the event.
Honored for his 38 years as an ag teacher and coach, Max Amann attended the festivities. He retired in 1980 but continues to support Utopia School. Amann coached the first girl’s team at the school and was on the staff in 1954 when the first game was played in the old stadium. He was at the dedication ceremony for the first game played in the new gym.
Walts recognized those whose contributions had made it possible for the gym to be completed and ready for Friday’s homecoming game: Joy Davenport contributed $3,000 for the score keeper’s table in memory of her late husband Kenneth; the First State Bank of Uvalde donated $3,500 for the score board; Vulcan contributed $3,000 for the score board; Wal-Mart donated $1,000 and Southwest Texas Telephone donated $850. School board members were recognized and included Ernie Moore, John Hutto, Allison Swift, John Hillis, Matt Gobert, Steve Schaefer and Pat Kjar. Shawn Burns, who was on the school board at the start of the gymnasium project, was also recognized. John Potter, homecoming king, offered the prayer for the dedication ceremony. This year’s homecoming queen is Kristi McCaleb.

Utopia gets peek at new gym
by Stephanie Logue BCC Staff
Published Dec. 15, 2005
|
Utopia’s old crowded gym with its “crow’s nest” on the wall for score keepers has now been replaced with a state-of-the-art facility at a cost of approximately $1.4 million. Work on the facility ran approximately six weeks behind schedule. A dedication ceremony is planned for Friday, Jan. 13.

Newly appointed Utopia school board member Pat Kjar attended her first official meeting on Monday, Dec. 12.

Utopia Independent School District Board of Trustee members were treated to a tour of Utopia’s new $1.4 million (approximate cost) gymnasium at their school board meeting Monday, Dec. 12. A dedication ceremony, followed by the first game in the new facility, has been scheduled for Friday, Jan. 13.
Newly appointed board member Pat Kjar attended her first meeting and was in time to hear Superintendent John Walts present Utopia’s district performance report. “I think we have a fantastic school,” the superintendent told those attending the board meeting. “There is always room for improvement. I hope we will always strive for that. I hate all the emphasis on the TAKS test and the stress it puts teachers and students under but that’s the way the state measures us. In life, we will always have stress.”
Walts said that as superintendent his goals for Utopia are to have 90 percent of the students pass TAKS and to be rated as an exemplary school. Utopia missed the exemplary rating this year and received a rating of recognized even though Utopia scored far above state averages in every category.
For the 04-05 school year, 100 percent of Utopia’s students took the TAKS test with 80 percent passing all tests compared to the state average of 62 percent. Utopia had zero criminal or violent incidents at school and an attendance rate of 95.7 percent. Ninety-four percent of the seniors received a high school diploma. Average SAT scores were 1029 compared to the state’s 989 in the most recent scores available, 2003.
School board members voted to make two changes to the student code of conduct. The code of conduct is in effect during the school year and in all schoolrelated extracurricular activities that take place outside the school year including FFA and 4-H.
Discipline measures may be reduced by coaches and student sponsors if a student self-reports an incident in a timely manner.

Student handles more than school
by Jordan Foster Utopia ISD Student
Published Nov. 10, 2005
|
Eighth grader, Tyler Wojciechowski, prepares for Algebra class to begin at Utopia School on Nov. 8.
|
As the teacher droned on, the eight grader glanced at what looked to be an iPod on his hip, following a daily routine of checking his blood sugar.
Fourteen-year-old Tyler Wojciechowski, is an average kid, just trying to get through Junior High -- but there is one characteristic that complicates his life.
More than 150 million people worldwide are diagnosed with diabetes, including major celebrities, political figures, and professional athletes: Thomas Edison, inventor of the light bulb, George Lucas, Star Wars director; tennis great, Billy Jean King, legendary author, Ernest Hemingway, Pope John Paul II, and Mikhail Gorbachev, to name a few.
Tyler Wojciechowski is one of these 150 million people.
“I’ve had diabetes since I was 15 months old, but It’s not like I feel any different than anybody else,” Tyler said.
Nevertheless, until a few years ago, Tyler had to control his diabetes through the old fashioned method of two injections of insulin which he administered to himself every day. Now, Tyler wears an “insulin pump” and with a push of a button, manages his sugar levels.
“I still have to prick my finger to test my sugar, but I can push a few buttons and keep my level where it needs to be,” Tyler said. “I like it because I don’t have to worry about what I eat as much as I had to before. I mean I still have to watch what I eat, but I can be more lenient on myself.”
Tyler is the middle sibling of five children; 23 year old half-sister Ashley, 16 year old half-brother Clay, and eleven year old twins, Austin and Katie.
“The bad thing about being the middle child is everybody gets to beat me up. I mean I can’t fight Clay because he’s way bigger than me, and I really don’t feel like fighting against the twins because I’ll just get in trouble,” Tyler said.
Tyler’s half-brother, Clay Newman, explains: “He [Tyler] invented the hit and run technique. Every time one of us starts fooling around and joking, he comes out of nowhere, hits us and then runs off so he won’t get hit back.”
While Tyler does not play any sports like Basketball, he has competed since third grade in roping and has accumulated four saddles, 20 buckles, and around $4,500 in winnings.
“I mean I don’t really think I’m great, but I’m pretty good,” Tyler said. “And I really don’t think the diabetes has affected it at all.”
A new student at Utopia, Tyler moved from Ocala, Florida, where he attended a school with 750 students. Of those, he was one of only four diagnosed with diabetes. Now, in Utopia, Tyler is the only student with diabetes - and girls’ coach, Suzanne Hallford - the only staff member who suffers from the disease.
“Back in Ocala there were three of us who had diabetes, and we were all friends,” Tyler said. “But now that I moved here I’m the only one except Coach Hallford.”
While Tyler keeps his diabetes well regulated with his insulin pump, the inevitable complications and problems do occur. Light-headedness, dizziness, mood swings, emotional outbursts, and strange taste sensations are all side-effects of the disease.
“When I went to school at Favra in Boerne, I passed out a couple of times, but then one time in Ocala my blood sugar got real high and I got real sick and had to get rushed to the emergency room,” Tyler said.
Based upon facts and real life evidence, the belief that diabetics are different than other people is a myth.
I’m just like everybody else,” Tyler said. “Except sometimes people ask me, 'hey what’s that on your hip?'”

Utopia Students earn All-State title
Published Aug. 18, 2005
Two Utopia students, Whitney Boyce and Lindsay Camp, have been named to the 2004-2005 All-State Journalism staff for The University Interscholastic League.
UIL director of journalism, Jeanne Acton, said, "the staff was created to recognize those journalism students who have gone above and beyond to improve their writing and reporting abilities."
To become a member of the All-State Journalism staff, students must accumulate points over the year based on UIL achievements in journalism competition and other writing and publication contests both statewide and nationwide. Then students apply to UIL to become a member of the staff. Any student who is involved in scholastic journalism in Texas is eligible for the staff.
"High school journalism students spend many nights and weekends preparing the school publications for distribution as well as preparing for writing competitions," Acton said. "Through scholastic journalism, students learn not only writing skills but also communication skills and organizational skills."
Texas is one of the first states to recognize student journalists in this way. The staff was created by former UIL journalism director Randy Vonderheid who saw a need to recognize the students for their work and success in writing.

Utopia's gym running behind schedule
By Stephanie Logue
Published Aug. 11, 2005
|
Utopia School's new gym is running behind schedule due to a wet spring last year but should be completed by January.
Goodbye "crow's nest." During basketball games, a platform emerges on the other side of the "Utopia Buffaloes" sign and scorekeepers climb up the metal extension ladder to the platform, then pull up the ladder to keep it from interfering with players. The new gym will be roomy enough not to rely on such ingenuity!
|
An unusually wet spring halted work on Utopia's new gymnasium, which is now scheduled to be completed by January. Optimistic forecasts had at first set the opening date as October.
Bandera County Chief Appraiser Ed Barnes attended the Monday, Aug. 8 Utopia Independent School District Board of Trustee meeting and requested that Utopia leave its $7,028.06 fund balance with the appraisal district for the purchase of new software. Utopia's taxes account for 6.5 percent of Bandera County taxes.
Utopia school board members expressed concern that if they left that money with Bandera County and a larger entitity -- like the Bandera school district -- refused, Utopia would lose its fund balance and then be hit with a higher portion of the tax bill in the future to make up the resulting deficit. They voted to approve Barnes' request as long as he garnered 100 percent particiaption with other entities.
Utopia's certified appraisal value is $110,000 million, up from $102 million last year. Utopia School is however, Superintendent John Walts said, stinging from a $160,00 decrease in state funds.
Utopia School budgeted an increase of $21,000 in teachers' salaries this year. Walts said the district needs to consider purchasing a new school bus, although that item is not in the proposed budget. "If we get behind on buying buses, we'll get hit with having to buy three or four at the same time. Our oldest bus is a 1993 with more than 100,000 miles on it."
Utopia's budget for next year is projected to be nearly 1.5 million, up from last year's total of more than 1.3 million. School board members approved a proposed tax rate of 1.42.

Utopia takes second at UIL Meet
by Somers Dean
Published March 10, 2005
At the Bandera Invitational UIL Meet sponsored by the Optimist Club, Utopia High School left taking second place overall beating eight 1A schools, two 2A schools, four 3A, and three 4A on March 5.
The math, number sense, and calculator teams dominated the competition. In math, Beth Cantrell led with a second place, followed by Whitney Boyce and Grant Potter with a fourth and seventh, giving the team first place overall. Whitney Boyce took second place in the calculator event. Kristi McCaleb and Shane Sheftall added to the calculator team winning first overall with their third and fifth places. Grant Potter, alone earned the second place trophy for the number sense.
|
Kristi McCaleb and Shane Sheftall discuss the results of the Calculator contest at the Bandera Invitational UIL Meet on March 4. Utopia High School won second place team against 17 other schools at the event.
|
In the ninth and tenth grade competition for number sense, Chase Hathorn tied for third.
In writing events, Beth Cantrell won ready writing and Whitney Boyce placed second in News writing. Like Boyce, Beck Alleman took second place in editorial writing with Jordan Foster winning sixth.
Second place was taken by the spelling team with Marisa Mauldin placing fourth and Tara Stacy placing sixth.
Like the spelling team, the social studies team took second team overall. Barbara Beakley led the team with a fourth place ribbon.
Utopia dominated the science event with Candice Thomas placing second, Grant Potter third, and Beth Cantrell fifth.
Although Lytle High School won first place overall in Saturday's event, Utopia UIL coordinator, Joan Clark, says that with a showing like the last two meets, the Buffaloes will definitely win district.
