Bandera Quilt Guild News
Submitted by Shirley Hood
Published March 20, 2008
Sixteen members of the Bandera Quilt Guild attended a Feb. 20 meeting at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center.
The first order of business was a presentation of $1,000 to the Silver Sage Director Ann Bishop, who accepted on behalf of the senior center. She informed Guild members that their generous donation would be used for the Meals on Wheels program.
Quilt Show Update
Tammy Kimmel of “Gone Quilting,” along with Noah’s Ark, will undertake the former “Fall into Quilting” Quilt Show this October. The proceeds will benefit Noah’s Ark’s new construction. A thank you goes out to Connie for donating a covering that can be used for selling raffle tickets at outdoor venues.
Rita Newman celebrated a birthday in February.
Show and Tell
During the “Show and Tell” portion of the meeting Debbie McAlister modeled a beautiful batik jacket, and displayed a lovely quilt of soft creams and brown paisleys in the Buzz Saw pattern.
Debra Pavelka fashioned two matching quilts for her daughters – one in pink, black & white and the other in purple, black & white.
Susie McCracken brought in a scrappy friendship star.
Gloria Greenlee’s “shows” included a vest and jacket from the same pattern. The jacket was a crazy quilt style in batiks and the vest was a wool/acrylic blend. Her “tell” was that her new sewing room is almost ready.
Linda Fletcher brought the April issue of Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine in which Sharon Meyer’s quilt, “Colorwash Wedding Star,” was featured on page 36. Brenda John provided a nostalgic moment by bringing in a Sunbonnet Sue Quilt made from her mother’s old dresser scarves.
Imogene Parker offered a modified log cabin quilt in soft browns and her scrappy version of the Buzzsaw from Gloria Greenlee’s workshop, while Dorothy Benham brought in a green and red donation quilt from Lynn Girard’s “Rodeo” workshop.
Janice Williams displayed a fish quilt she made for Rev. Rick Dunham and that was machine quilted by Debra Pavelka. Connie Shows exhibited a beautiful aqua and gold Jackie Robinson pattern, machine quilted by Karen Nanos.
Marilyn Crump’s “shows” included a hand-quilted, red and white table topper, called, “Christmas or Not,” and “Bits and Pieces,” a lap quilt made from charm packs and quilted by Midge Moseley.
Linda Fletcher brought a Pineapple Star wall hanging in blues and golds, while Lynn Girard modeled a sweater crocheted for her by her daughter.
Shirley Hood serenaded the group with her rendition of Happy Birthday on the “Panjo.” We noticed that you’re not on American Idol this go around – maybe next time.
Quilt Block of the Month
The February block is a scrappy strip set, which forms a wonky star when blocks are joined. Each kit will make two blocks. Janice Williams won the January “Chain Block” blocks in purple and blue tones.
Mark calendars for these programs:
April - Bead & Embellishment Workshop
August - Quilt Rodeo
November - Part I of 2009 Raffle Quilt
Birthday Months: As soon as your group knows your program for your birthday month, contact Midge Moseley, so the programs can be published in future newsletters.
Special Projects
Lynn Girard still has kits available for donation quilts. She also has backpack kits available and can make tent kits.
Linda Fletcher will help Lynn by checking on where we can donate our “Quilts of Valor.”
Membership Dues
Dues for 2008 are $15 per year if we e-mail your newsletter, $20 per year if we snail mail it to you.
Scraps
“Gone Quilting” is moving. The new location will be across the street from the Gingerbread House with the grand opening set for Tuesday, April 1.
“Fabric ‘N Friends” is building a new shop about five blocks from its current location in Castroville. The shop will relocate around mid-May or June.
The 10th annual Bluebonnet Trail Shop Hop is set for April 10 through April 13.
The first annual Texas Trail Ride Shop Hop is slated for June 19 through June 21.

The 2007 "Fall into Quilting" Quilt Show held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 20, and 21, proved bittersweet for its sponsoring organization, the Heritage Study Group.
"Unless we can find someone else will to take this event over next year, this will probably be the last quilt show," said one member, who added, "We have very few members and it's just getting to be too much for us."
To a woman, however, the 13-member group lauded the efforts of "benevolent despot" Lisa Tucker who served as chairman for this year's quilt show. Everyone concurred, "She's been amazing. This would never have come about at all if it hadn't been for her hard work."
This year's "Fall into Quilting" featured 65 entries in 11 categories. Big winners included Best of Show, "Porcelain China" by Barbara Wortman; Judges' Choice, "Totally Pink" by Midge Mosely; and People's Choice, "Cowboy Country" by Terry Patrick.
Other top entries included large hand-quilted, first place, Betty Brister and second place, Carol Hilton; large hand-quilted by two people, first and second places, Louise Kyle and Linda Kurtz; large machine-quilted, first Debbie McAlister and second, Midge Mosely; large machine quilted by two people, first Lois Cantu and Elaine Connor and second Margaret Callahan and Margaret Ann Smith; small hand-quilted, first Barbara Wortman and second Betty Brister; and small machine-quilted, first Gloria Green Lee and second Linda Fletcher.
More top entries included hand-quilted wall hanging, first Betty Brister and second Peggy Carlyle; machine-quilted wall hanging, first Susan Velzy and second Gloria Greenlee; wearables, first Carol Hilton and second Susan Velzy; miscellaneous, first Carol Hilton and second Louise Kyle; and youth, first Sarah Carlyle and second Megan Carlyle.
A friendship quilt made by residents of Bandera County in the 1930s was donated by Diane Payne for a silent auction. The piece of county history brought a whopping final bid of $1,600. In addition, winner of the raffle quilt, "Indian Summer, Bandera Nights," was Mico's Sally Aguillen. A total of $2,000 in raffle tickets were sold.
Proceeds from "Fall into Quilting" benefited programs of the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center. The Study Heritage Group, a program affiliated with the Bandera County Family and Consumer Science Extension service, also provides child-sized quilts for every student enrolled in the local Head Start program and donates to the 4-H scholarship program and Project Graduation.
The Heritage Study Group meets at 9:30 am, every Wednesday of the month except for the third Wednesday at the Silver Sage Corral, 803 Buck Creek Boulevard, and is always looking for more members. For more information on the group, call the local extension office at 830-796-7755.

Quilt show features Bandera history

The Heritage Study Group's 2007 raffle quilt, "Indian Summer, Bandera Nights" queen-size, colorful, handquilted and impressive
|
The emergence of the handmade quilt as an art form occurred after America's Bicentennial celebration in 1976. But, as history shows, the virtues of this centuries-old handicraft have always been prized in Bandera County.
This weekend some of the area's liveliest and most appealing contemporary quilts will be celebrated at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center, 803 Buck Creek Boulevard during a juried show, "Fall Into Quilting," sponsored by the Heritage Study Group. An array of quilts created by members and other participants will be on display from 10 am to 4 pm, Saturday, Oct. 20, and from noon to 4 pm, Sunday, Oct. 21. There is no admission charge for the show.
Members of the Heritage Study Group have designed a queen-sized quilt, "Indian Summer, Bandera Nights," as a raffle item. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5, and may be purchased at the Silver Sage Corral, as well as during the two-day event. The drawing will be held on Sunday and the lucky ticket-holder need not be present. "This would be a wonderful opportunity for someone to go home with a beautiful memory of Bandera," said a spokesman for the heritage group, adding, " a memory that will keep them warm on Hill Country winter nights."
Judging of the show entries will take place prior to the show's opening, enabling those attending to determine how their favorites fared. In addition to bed coverings, other quilted objects, such as wall hangings, handbags, clothing and baby items, will also be displayed. Some of the items will be for sale.
Another fun feature of "Fall into Quilting" is the Sew Shop, which features a collection of fabric and sewing items offered at rock-bottom prices.
Additionally, a piece of Bandera history will go on the auction block during the show. A friendship quilt, made by residents of Bandera County in the 1930s, was rediscovered by Diane Payne in 1998. The Alkek Elementary School teacher spotted the vintage quilt top at the Country Depot in 1998. After recognizing the stitched signatures and noting "Bandera" on the squares, Payne realized she had discovered a treasure. One piece was missing and then-Alkek Principal Sandy North created a reasonable facsimile from vintage material.
After being exhibited at this year's quilt show, the vintage quilt will be included in a special silent auction, with an opening bid of $250.
The silent auction will conclude at 3 pm, Sunday, Oct. 21.
Some members of Bandera County's founding families stitched the names into the quilt, including Amasa Clark's granddaughters, Mary Klemstein, Letha Smith and Effie Wedgeworth. Other signers were Emma Lahree Smith Wilson, Letha Smith's daughter; Medina's Jewell Loesberg; Cora Clark; Adalia Bausch; Ella Fries, grandmother of Scooter Fries; Lucille Gray, Emma Bell Clark, Maude Clark, Della Clark and her daughter, Lilly Pierce; Catherine Clark; Thelma Jureczki; Christina Jureczki; Myrtle Jureczki; and Annie Jureczki.
Peggy Huffman's extensive research traced the names included on the historic quilt.
"We would like to thank Diane Payne for her generosity in donating this historic signature quilt to our show," the heritage group spokesman said.
In a remarkable coincidence, several years after the friendship quilt's discovery, local historian Barbara Merrell purchased a collection of old quilt squares at the now-defunct Longhorn Antiques Store. While attending the quilt show that same year, she discovered one of her recently purchased squares had been quilted by Ophelia Clark Brown over 70 years earlier for inclusion in the Bandera Friendship Quilt. The 94-year-old Brown was gratified to see her handiwork again.
"High bidder for the Bandera Friendship Quilt will leave with a true piece of local history," said the spokesman. She invited everyone to attend the show and "enjoy the creativity and workmanship of local quilters."
All proceeds from the annual quilt show will benefit the programs of the Silver Sage Corral.

Quilting enthusiasts who also have access to the world wide web are invited to visit www.quiltersonreview.com and join fellow quilters in a fun and worthwhile program.
Local aficionado Major Janice Williams (ret. US Army) joined the group 4 years ago after hearing about it from members of a quilting bee. She describes herself as being an "absolute beginner" at the time, but soon became more adept at the art of quilting with the advice and assistance she received from her fellow cyber-quilters.
The group participates in fabric swaps, plays quilter's bingo, exchanges photos of their work and shares comments, personal biographies and tips-of-the-day online. They also hold an annual retreat for members. This July 12 through 15, they will meet in Salt Lake City, Utah for their yearly get-together. Smaller, regional groups meet informally whenever possible.
A "Block Lotto"is a monthly activity the group sponsors in which each member sends two of their fabric blocks to the organization's Wyoming headquarters. The blocks are made according to different themes, such as the fabric's color, year of production or design content. Once a month, half of the blocks are donated to a charity organization and the other half are won by the club member whose name is picked in a drawing. That person assembles the blocks into a quilt– a true group effort which invariably results in a beautiful and very practical creation.
Quilter's bingo, which may take up to a month before a player posts "bingo!" on the group's website, involves mailing in two "fat quarters"( a.k.a. F.Q.s, or 18x22-inch pieces of fabric ready to be incorporated into a quilt ) in exchange for two bingo cards. Twice daily, players receive 2 numbers via e-mail and check to see if they have a match. Winners are sent the submitted F.Q.s as prizes.
Williams credits the group not only with helping to improve her quilting skills, but also with introducing her to a circle of friends– from all over the country– whom she otherwise would never have met.

Quilts delivered to veterans
Published Nov. 30, 2006
The newly organized Bluebonnet Study Group, under the host agency of Bandera's Extension Service, made 39 quilts for veterans at the Kerrville Veterans Hospital and delivered them.
Olga Bolduc said the 15-member group spent approximately two months making the quilts, most of which sported patriotic colors and themes. Some of the quilts were lap-sized for wheelchairs and some were full sized for patients that are restricted to beds.
"They loved their quilts. It made us feel so good that we will probably do it again. As soon as we got there with the quilts, they started putting the patient's names on them and giving the smaller ones to those in wheel chairs for lap rugs and the larger ones for the beds. The patients fell in love with their quilts and didn't want to be parted from them. It made them very happy and that made us very happy."
Bandera artist Bolduc said that the idea for making the quilts was the joint effort of the Bluebonnet Study Group.

Bandera Quilt Guild News

Published Nov. 9, 2006
The "Fall into Quilting" quilt show in October was a huge success, presenting lots of beautiful art for people to enjoy, and earning a sizable amount for the Silver Sage Corral. The success is definitely attributed to the hard work of all who volunteered to help with the show.
Terry Patrick and Lisa Tucker, co-chairs of the quilt show to express their thanks and appreciation for those of you from the Guild who so graciously donated your time Friday through Sunday. It's so rewarding to see everything come together with everyone working towards the same goal.
October Meeting
The Bandera Quilt Guild met Oct. 18 at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center with 22 members in attendance.
Lynn Girard displayed a picture of the quilt top for the 2007 Apple Harvest Quilt.
Following the meeting members were to cut fabric in preparation for block assembly. A sewing day will be scheduled in the near future to start putting the quilt top together. Kits will be available for members to complete. It is hoped the quilt top will be done by the end of December.
Betty Brister and Connie Shows reported that everyone in attendance at the retreat had a wonderful time. Because of the outstanding facilities, they have decided to reserve Utopia by the River for the 2007 retreat. Peggy Carlyle and Marilyn Crump have agreed to be in charge of the 2007 Guild newsletter. We are still in need of a quilt show chairperson.

Published Sept. 21, 2006
August Meeting
The Bandera Quilt Guild met Aug. 16 at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center with 22 members and two guests, Lois Cantu and Elizabeth Smith, in attendance.
Linda Fletcher received a thank you from Genie Strickland, Event Coordinator of the Apple Harvest and Baxter Adams, owner of Loves Creek Orchard, thanking us for our participation and inviting us to return in 2007.
The raffle quilt was taken to the San Antonio Guild and a total of $83 in tickets was sold at the meeting. Members are reminded that ticket sales need to be turned in by the September meeting. The drawing for the raffle quilt will take place at the guild meeting Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Lynn Girard reported that several members participated in the in the planning and design of next year's raffle quilt. A design has been selected and will feature a 32" center medallion with a variety of boarders and blocks. It is hoped that we will be able to have the quilt top done in December. Members of the guild are asked to donate fabrics in reds, golds, greens, and tans by the September meeting.
Our 2006 retreat is almost upon us. The dates for the retreat are Sept. 25-27. The location is Utopia on the River, and from all indications, those in attendance will be guaranteed a wonderful, relaxing experience. In addition, other amenities available include hiking, horse back riding, pool and hot tub. We currently have 11 signed up and have room for at least 20 guests. If you're interested, call Betty Brister at (830)460-7313 as soon as possible to reserve your space.
A nominating committee has been appointed for selection of the guild officers for the up-coming year. Committee members include Betty Brister, Lynn Girard and Connie Shows. If you would like to be considered for one of the officers, please contact one of the committee members.
Dorothy Benham, Betty Brister and Barbara Young won door prizes.
The make-a-bag workshop followed the meeting. From all indications, those who participated were having a terrific time. They were still going strong at 3 p.m. We hope to see the fruits of their labor at the September meeting.
August Birthdays: Lynn Girard, Linda Kurtz and Sharon Meyer.
Karen Hoskelis' father was admitted to the hospital for surgery. He is now out of ICU and is hopefully on the road to recovery.
Carol and Richard Reinhard have sold their home and will be moving to Kerrville, which will eliminate the long drives to the doctor.
Shadows: Margaret Callahan had a minor automobile accident but was not injured.
Acts of kindness are seldom forgotten. Keep our members in your prayers and send those cards and letters of support and encouragement to help brighten the days of the recipients
Show and Tell
Linda Farris: 1920's vintage paper-pieced quilt top purchased at an estate auction for $5.

The August "Hidden Star" block in white and blue was won by Imogene Parker.
Another drawing for the July red, white and blue blocks was done and the winner was Carol Nichols.
Be sure to turn in your outstanding blocks from previous months.
At the September Guild meeting, the B.O.M. kit will cost $2 (instead of $1) but the winner will receive enough fabric to complete the quilt top AND the back. The cost of each block is higher due to the increased amount of fabric to be received by the winner.
Programs
September -- Fabric Exchange
All members participating need to bring 3 of your favorite fat quarters. We want the selection to be outstanding. It promises to be lots of fun and with any luck, we'll all go home a winner. National Sewing Month
I'm sure I don't have to remind any of you that September is National Sewing Month!! It's a perfect time to go shopping, since most of the surrounding fabric stores are featuring sales and specials, especially on holiday fabrics. You still have time to get started on those holiday sewing projects: that door banner for Halloween, those placemats or table runner and matching napkins for Thanksgiving, or the Christmas gifts that are always on our list. Procrastination is not an option -- now's the time to get started.
Start by shopping at our local quilt shop and meet the new owner. Louise Kyle has sold the Bee Hive to Tammy Kimmel. Tammy has renamed the shop to "Gone Quiltin". She intends to carry a great selection of quilting fabric and supplies, and offer classes related to quilting and sewing.
Contact Carol Hilton at (830)535-6800 or email: ez4u2c22006@totalusa.net with any corrections or additions.

Bandera Quilt Guild News
Submitted by Carol Hilton
Published June 15, 2006
The Bandera Quilt Guild met on May 17, at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center with 24 members and three guests in attendance. Connie Shows, president, welcomed members and guests: Holly Nelson, Barbara Sullivan from Kerrville, and Amy Stahl (Gail Wilson's mother).
Linda Fletcher discussed the Apple Harvest quilt raffle tickets which were distributed to those members in attendance at the April and May Guild meetings. She will mail out the remaining tickets not picked up. More tickets are available to members who want to sell more. All members are asked to sell at least $25 worth of tickets.
The raffle quilt will be displayed at Apple Harvest Days in Medina on July 15 and 16, along with a display of quilts provided by guild members. There will not be an official quilt show this year. The drawing for the quilt will be held in September.
Linda reminded the members that the Apple Harvest raffle quilt is on the frame, marked and ready for your loving hands to help quilt. As we approach the dates for it's official debut, an appeal is made now to all members to support our Guild by giving at least three hours of your time to hand quilting. Midge Moseley will be machine quilting the middle appliqué. It's our goal to have the hand quilting done by the end of June.!
Connie Shows placed orders for Jasmine Quilting Frames on May 1. For those who ordered, delivery is expected in approximately four weeks.
Midge Moseley discussed the June program ?Strip Poker. Please see "Program" section in this newsletter for needed supplies.
Gail Wilson shared information regarding a mini-quilting adventure (retreat) being held in Boerne featuring a Karen Stone quilt. It consists of one teacher and a small group of quilters and included lots of amenities, at a cost of $570. Gail attended something similar last year and definitely gives it her "stamp of approval". If you are interested, please contact Gail Wilson at 562-3280 or send an email to GailWilson@starband.net.
The workshop by Holly Nelson was held immediately after the short business meeting. It was extremely enjoyable and very informative. Holly outdid herself with the kits and the instruction. What an easy technique for those of us who love to do hand appliqué, but it can also be used for machine appliqué.
May Birthdays:
Linda Barton, Merrily Cage, Peggy Carlyle, Marilyn Crump, and Barbara Merrell.

Bandera Quilt Guild News

Published May 12, 2005
The Bandera Quilt Guild met on April 20, at the Silver Sage Corral Senior Activity Center at 10 a.m. with 27 members, and three guests: Karen Nano, Helen Brandon, and Margo Parker in attendance.
Every member is asked to hand quilt three hours on the 2005 Raffle Quilt. Stop by the Center any day during the week, between 9 and 4, or on Friday evening and "put in your time." Be sure to record your quilting hours on the sheet provided.
The Medina Apple Festival will be at a new location this year—Mr. Adam’s Apple Orchard. The Festival will be for one week, the last week in July, but our quilt show will only be held on Saturday, July 30. Dee LeClair has been selected as judge for the 2005 Apple Festival Quilt Show.
Lynn Girard has kits available for the Spirit of Christmas baby/children quilts and Linda Kurtz was given a very special thank you for her donation of fabric for 25 quilt kits.
It’s time to start thinking about the Guild Retreat, being held at Leakey on Oct. 3-5. If you’re planning to attend, the $50 deposit needs to be given to Connie Shows by the July meeting. This retreat features the attendees as the STARS, since everyone will be bringing their own projects. It’s an opportunity to collaborate with fellow quilters without phones, housework, and husbands, not to mention having all the food prepared and served, and let you just sit back and enjoy–what more could you want
To end the meeting, Shirley Hood displayed photos of our "Fashion Show" and what a hoot –but they certainly displayed lots of talent! Thanks to all who participated.
The T-Shirt demonstration presented by Karen Nanos was extremely interesting and informative. She gave us lots of pointers on how to treat the T-shirt fabric before working it into the quilt top, as well as quilting, once the top was completed.
Several members stayed after the meeting, and worked on a variety of projects of their choosing. May will be no exception. It’s a perfect opportunity to put in those few hours of hand quilting on the Raffle Quilt. Those interested, just bring your lunch and any project you’re working on, hang around, relax and enjoy after the May meeting. (Of course, if you don’t want to bring your lunch, it’s always an excuse to "go out for lunch.")
Sunshine: April Birthdays: Carol Cutler, Carolyn Hughes, Elizabeth Mead, Betty Ringling
Show and Tell
What a plethora of talent!
