Over 30 years after the founding of Vanderpool’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church, a new worship hall has been constructed, comprised of a newly carved altar and stained glass as well as a historical crucifix and décor.
St. Mary’s original building, which was moved from Knippa, had been a functioning church since 1913. “The old building was deteriorating quickly,” said Francis Bunk, treasurer of the St. Mary’s Society.
Although the new, year-old building has modern stained glass made by Lois Farmer and an altar carved by Kenneth Rochat, St. Mary’s has a history dating back to Roman Catholic influence. The Bell family, who donated land to the founders of the church, are also responsible for bringing historical statues and decorative items from overseas.
The crucifix above the altar was carried from Rome by Mary Helen Bell in the mid-1900s. After moving to Galveston and Bryan, a century-old grotto came to Vanderpool from St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. The grotto has resided at St. Mary’s since 1984. A painting of Jesus Christ, which hangs over the main entry to the church, was painted by Bell’s nephew, who also donated land to the cause.
“We tried to salvage as much as we could from the old building,” said St. Mary’s Society President Ginger Canion.
After dedication of the new building, St. Mary’s was served by a talented new priest, Reverend Antonio, a native of Venezuela. The church is a mission of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church of Sabinal, and Hernandez also serves the churches of Sabinal, Vanderpool and Knippa. Currently, the priest is only in Vanderpool on Sundays, and travels to surrounding areas during the week.
Due to the tourism at Lost Maples and other areas surrounding Vanderpool and Utopia, the size of St. Mary’s Catholic Church’s congregation varies. Although many church regulars are in the area only on certain weekends, St. Mary’s works well with the community, assisting people through donations for the food bank and during various Christmas drives.
After more than three decades in an antiquated building, St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Vanderpool now has a prayer hall for which to be thankful.
DeMotte appointed interim pastor
Published July 26, 2007

Pastor Paul DeMotte’s first week with the Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church was during the Avalanche Ranch Vacation Bible School.

The new interim pastor at Pipe Creek Presbyterian Church is the Rev. Paul DeMotte, a church spokesman announced recently.
After graduating from Westminster College and Princeton Seminary, DeMotte and his wife, Liz, sold all their belongings three years ago and traveled to Guatemala. Liz DeMotte worked with mission teams installing water purification projects and also supported various co-ops of Mayan women producing native textiles.
In Guatemala, DeMotte trained Mayan Presbyterian and Pentecostal pastors in biblical Greek, as well as teaching German, English and Spanish grammar in a Christian school.
Eleven months ago his wife entered a clinic for a routine procedure, but picked up a septic infection and died three days later. A month ago, DeMotte returned to the Hill Country Paul where he hopes to serve the Presbyterian Church and spoil his six grandchildren.
Describing his faith, DeMotte said, “My greatest blessing has been a continual awareness of God working in my life. While others have mountain-top experiences interspersed with dark nights of the soul, my experience of the triune God has been a steady, calming presence at the core of my life.” Equating his faith to the preflight announcement, “Put on your oxygen mask, before attempting to help others,” he continued, “My experience of the Holy Spirit has been something akin to oxygen. It’s a quiet, subtle, life-giving flow that is always there when I am smart enough to access it and to use it in the service of others.”
